Our Story

During the 1960s and 1970s, the burgeoning Muslim community in North America found its early foundations. At the heart of this growth was the Muslim Student Association (MSA) on college campuses, where forward-thinkers recognized Zakat as pivotal in forging a unified Muslim identity. They saw Zakat as essential for communal prosperity, contingent on effective organization. Their vision extended to allocating Zakat for various social causes, all aimed at preserving Islamic identity for future generations. They championed the institutionalization of Zakat alongside other organizational endeavors, viewing it as crucial for reinvigorating individual and familial observance, fostering communal bonds, and addressing social issues.

Their efforts aimed to deepen the Muslim community’s roots in Canada, safeguarding its rich identity and heritage. With faith in Allah, they mobilized community members, educated the youth, supported the elderly, and safeguarded their identity. As the community expanded with new arrivals seeking fresh starts, the need for robust organizational structures became evident to nurture a cohesive community and shield it from fragmentation.

Guided by mentors’ wisdom and inspired by visionary aspirations, the concept of MAC (Muslim Association of Canada) took shape. Like a beacon symbolizing permanence and stability, MAC was envisioned as a cornerstone for the Muslim community. Over the past 25 years, this vision propelled MAC to become the nation’s largest Muslim organization, reaching across the country and deeply impacting local communities. Along this journey, passion, energy, and resources were poured into cultivating vibrant communities.

United by faith and shared values, MAC now embarks on a purpose-driven path to shape the next 25 years, by the grace of Allah. This entails ensuring the vitality of a dynamic Muslim community, rooted in authentic Islamic identity and proudly Canadian. Today, we proudly introduce The Zakat House of Canada (بيت الزكاة الكندي), marking another milestone in our commitment to serving and strengthening our community.
